America 250: 250 Years of Freedom

As the United States marks its semiquincentennial, Lexington's celebration takes on special significance. Mayor Linda Gorton captured the spirit perfectly: "The Fourth of July is one of our city's favorite celebrations. And I cannot think of a better way to honor our nation's 250th birthday than by bringing our entire community together to celebrate the freedoms, traditions, and spirit that unite us."

Special America 250 elements include the Hamilton sing-along kickoff, a dedicated "Happy 250, America" ice cream social with free cake, a patriotic Southland Jamboree featuring the U.S. Army's Six String Soldiers, and an extra-grand finale during the July 4 fireworks display. Residents, businesses, and parade participants are encouraged to decorate in red, white, and blue, prizes will be awarded for the most creative displays along the parade and race routes.

Marching down historic Main Street from Midland Avenue to North Mill Street, the noon procession features colorful floats, community organizations, musical groups, and equestrian units. In 2026, participants and spectators alike are invited to embrace the America 250 theme by decorating in red, white, and blue. Prizes will be awarded for the top three floats as well as the best-decorated homes and businesses along both the parade and Bluegrass 10K routes.

Other cherished traditions include the public reading of the Declaration of Independence on the courthouse steps and the massive fireworks display made possible through the longstanding partnership with R.J. Corman Railroad Group. These events create powerful moments of shared patriotism and community pride that have defined Lexington's Fourth of July for generations.

Why This Matters in 2026

"Coming off a big year celebrating Lexington's 250th birthday, we are excited to elevate and add new events to celebrate our nation's birthday… This is one of our biggest weeks of the year."
