Union Celebrates America

A Proud Tradition Since 1982

The Union Celebrates America festival traces its roots to July 3, 1982, when the City of Union held its very first hometown Independence Day celebration. Back then it was known as the "Little Big Town Parade," a humble procession that rolled down Old Union Road – the only major roadway in town at the time. That original event included a community gathering and what was then the only fireworks display in all of Boone County. The celebration was organized to support the newly formed Union Rescue Squad, showing from day one how this festival has always been about more than fireworks – it's about community spirit and giving back.

Over four decades, the event has grown from a small parade into Northern Kentucky's largest single-night 4th of July gathering. What began as a local rescue-squad fundraiser has evolved into a major civic tradition that now draws thousands of families each year. The move to the spacious Larry A. Ryle High School campus allowed the festival to expand with more entertainment, larger fireworks shows, and additional family activities while keeping its warm, small-town heart intact. Today, Union Celebrates America stands as a shining example of how one community's dedication can create lasting memories and strengthen neighborhood bonds across Boone County and beyond.

"The same hometown spirit that lit up Old Union Road in 1982 still burns bright today," say longtime residents. This year's America 250 milestone gives the festival even greater significance – a chance to reflect on 250 years of American freedom while looking forward with renewed patriotism.
